5/29-6/1: THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL FIRST ANNUAL OPE OLYMPICS!!!! Kindergarten and 1st: Students practiced cooperation while working together on the parachute. Later students worked through various stations including, jump rope, bowling, soccer, and scoops. Students have the opportunity to explore their locomotor and manipulative skills. 2-3rd grade: Students have really enjoyed working cooperatively on the parachute so we did this for our warm-up. This has been a great team builder and leadership exercise. Students are challenged to get the equipment on the parachute to fly up as high as possible, however this only works if everybody is working together and there is communication! We then played our second week of scatter ball which is a striking and running game. 4-6th: Students learned at striking game called over the line. They enjoyed this game and were quite proud of distance they were able to hit! Students counted up points throughout each inning and were very good sports!
5/21-5/25: Kinder: Kinder worked through an obstacle course which incorporated gymnastics skills including rolling, tumbling, climbing, and built strength while on the monkey bars. They then played red light, yellow light, green light, a game where students have the opportunity to choose destinations, follow the road rules and drive to destinations following the light changes! 1st Grade: Warmed up with Parachute, they also played red light, yellow light, green light! They are working on locomotors, listening, and following the driving rules! 2-6th: This week we had great discussions on the importance of sportsmanship and appropriate gestures to close a game or activity. These included positive "good game", or "nice Job" followed by a hand shake, high five, or fist bump! I was impressed by how kind and thoughtful this conversation became! Students then played a striking game called "scatter ball" working on their teamwork, and strategy while striking the ball and running to cones, followed by defense skills for teams in the outfield! 5/14-5/18: This week students got excited for OPE olympics by running the qualifying lap for the one competitive event called the Olympic Torch Relay. Students were reminded that they should be excited for those who won because they will go on to represent their class against other grade level classes! K: Students played " hand soccer" which was a great game to build on striking skills, cooperation with one another and good sportsmanship. 1st grade: Students practiced different skills old and new in station rotations including basketball, jump rope, as well as soccer. Students were very excited to jump rope which was demonstrated for the first time today, many students were new to it! 2-4th: Learned a new game called "Ring ball", a combination game between basketball, football, as well as incorporating tagging. Students enjoyed this game, and I am hoping we can continue to build on our ring- ball skills! 5-6th: Students in 5th grade recently finished fitness testing and got a choice day where they had options to play previous unit games. Students chose basketball, volleyball, handball and soccer. 6th grade: These students missed out on a week of soccer due to 6th grade camp, they requested we play so we played a giant game of 3 ball soccer where there are 3 soccer balls in at a time, keeping it exciting and fast paced. 5/7-5/11: K: Kinder played a school favorite game of navigating and tagging called line tag. They then had a blast in a scooter relay, all while cheering on their class mates! 1st: Locomotor relays for warm-ups, then students tested out a new game we called "hand soccer". The students really enjoyed this game, as they practiced striking skills, cooperation and sportsmanship! 2-6th: Students learned the basics of volleyball serving, rotating and positioning on the court through a demonstration game. Students then played games, and rotated to play other teams!
4/30-5/4: K + 1st: Kinder worked on locomotor skills through an obstacle course, students endurance has grown significantly from the beginning of the year! Kinder and first then worked on paddle skills and manipulative skills, practicing bumping a tennis ball on a racquet, and passing to other friends! 2-6th: Students learned how to bump, set and serve a volleyball. They then had the opportunity to play in a small group or practice over lowered nets. Students really seem to enjoy volleyball and are working on communicating and coordination with others while in the game.
4/23-4/27: K+1st: Kinder played their first game of line tag, which is a favorite among other grades, students work on locomotors, and moving safely in a small area. 1st grade played avalanche, also a game on locomotors and anticipating movements. Students then moved on to manipulative skills including striking, catching and throwing with frisbees, bouncy balls as well as scoops! 2-6th: 5th grade continues to work diligently on fitness testing, they are very proud of improving and working hard on accomplishing goals! Students had their second week of lacrosse practicing scooping, catching, throwing and cradling. They had opportunities to shoot on the goal as well as steal the bacon and egg toss. Next we are onto volleyball skills!
4/16-4/20: 2-6th: This week we are warming up with a quick cooperative activity to get to know our classmates, share about our break and move all at the same time! Students then learn the various parts of a lacrosse stick, and 4 major lacrosse skills including, passing, catching, cradling and scooping the ball. Students then put this into practice with partners on the field. K+1st: Students were very excited to be back in P.E., we also begun our day with a get to know our classmates activity where students did various exercises and shared about their breaks! We then played a cooperative game of "What time is it Mr. Fox" where each student got the opportunity to be the "Fox" while others listened and took steps after hearing the time!
3/19-3/23: This week flew by with rain and a very exciting gold rush day, lots of miners out there on the field! This was the 2nd week of basketball unit where students had choices on whether they would like to play a basketball game or continue to practice shooting and dribbling unstructured! Students Students in 5th grade worked on their push-ups to prepare for fitness testing and are looking very strong! Kinder played Plank tag which was a hit and 1st grade had indoor P.E. due to rain where we danced and played some heads up 7 up! Have a great conference week and spring break OPE! When we come back we will begin lacrosse!
3/12-3/16: March Madness has begun so we are celebrating with a unit on basketball. Students are learning fundamental skills of dribbling, passing and shooting. They also have time to practice skills and score on modified goals with hula hoops hanging on the rim. Students are enjoying dribbling between their legs and creating new patterns with their skills learned! Students choose different basketball games including "lightning", HORSE, and around the world. Next week we will be playing mini games!
3/5-3/9: Walk the wheel week was a huge success! Students played various games this week, 3rd and 4th grade tested out a new game to OPE called 3 ball soccer, this will definitely be something to try for 5th and 6th! Second grade played one of the favorite games called "rocks" which is a spin off of capture the flag developing dodging and team strategies. Kinder and 1st worked through an obstacle course, and then had a blast with the Parachute!! Thank you to all families that came to P.E. you are a huge help in your students learning how important staying active is! Next week we begin our Basketball unit!
2/26-3/2: This week students 3-6 further developed their tennis skills with doubles games. Second grade did indoor P.E., playing tic-tac-toe fitness as well as go noodle! Our kinder and first graders warmed up through an obstacle course, and then played a game called "Are you nemo?" where students need to find the 2 nemos in the round and line up behind them. Students really enjoyed this game! NEXT WEEK! Parents walk the wheel, looking forward to having parents join us! Also, please turn in February fitness calendars!!
2/19-2/23: Our 2-6th graders practiced the pacer test, the 4-6th graders compared the mile to the 20 -meter pacer test, and see which one felt more challenging to prepare for fitness testing and track progress. Students surprised themselves by the amount of laps they could run and worked very hard to beat their last amount! 2-6th were then introduced to a new unit of Tennis. This week they practiced individual striking and ball control skills and next week we will be playing net games! Our Kinder and 1st graders played cone dance tag, with efforts to be honest once tagged, and develop movement patterns in a designated space. Students then dribbled and worked on catching and throwing. Our 1st graders enjoyed creating letters and with their bodies and the help of other friends, they were very creative and many shared more difficult letters and words to spell with their bodies, this activity was great way to incorporate the alphabet into movement and collaborative team work!
2/12-2/16: Olympics continue! This week our upper grades ran the mile to test our their cardiovascular endurance and prepare them for future fitness testing, this is a tough task to complete 6 laps and they were very proud once completed! Students in 2-6th grade played mini games of hockey, this was a very popular sport which many students found very exciting! We reviewed the meaning of the olympic rings and reminded ourselves of the importance of class and school unity! kindergarten explored with hula hoops and many really enjoyed jump roping with them, and twirling them in circles! 1st grade is passing and catching with tennis balls and cones, making "ice cream cones". Also playing a new game called line tag on the basketball courts, developing balance, and locomotors!
2/5-2/9: OLYMPICS Begin! This week each class participated in an olympic torch relay, pictures above! Kinder and first worked on locomotors and counting with a game called "captain midnight", students know it as "Mr. Fox" students were so excited for this game and Ms. Humann only tagged a few assistants. In honor of the winter olympics 2-6th developed their hockey skills with stations , a shooting station, mini game station as well as a weave to develop stick skills. 1/29-2/2: This week was exceptionally packed week with APEX and lots of excitement! I was so impressed by student involvement in the run run and saw a lot of pride in the amount of laps completed! This week 2nd-6th played a game called "Rocks", which is a spin off of capture the flag involving over 12 flags(frisbees) per side. Students were reminded the importance of honesty and being good sports as they pull or get their flag belt pulled. Students ran dodged, and pulled flags. This is one of the favorites, and students were working very hard to gain those flags! Kinder this week played a game called "cone kickball" introducing running the bases and fielding. First grade worked on team work and cooperation with a cup stacking relay, hula hoop team challenge as well as aim and accuracy while playing a fun game called "hoops". Next week we are starting our Olympics unit with an opening baton relay as well as assembling our olympic rings!
1/22-1/26: The fitness calendar is back for February, and will be available every other month! 38 students returned their calendars filled with how active they were over December! I have it attached above, fill it out and bring it back beginning of march!! 2-5th graders played kickball games against most of the class. 2nd and 3rd played "Cone kickball" which is a game focused on strategic aim and quickly picking up cones as outfielders ran, and passed the ball back to the pitcher. Students enjoyed cheering one another along and were reminded the importance of giving others positive feedback and encouragement! kindergarten and 1st grade warmed up with "spot dance tag", a very active and fun warm-up, we then moved into a modified game of kickball where each student had an opportunity to kick and run the bases!
1/16-1/19: This week out 2-6th graders got the opportunity to test out their aerobic capacity by trying the 20 meter Pacer test! This test along with the miles are used to test aerobic capacity in fitness testing. Students challenged themselves and worked hard till the end of 20-25 laps and were very impressive! The verbal directions and guide can be found on youtube and is a great thing for students to practice at home in 20 meters of free space! We then continued our kickball unit and students caught on quickly to the rules and tactfully aimed at open spots on the field. This week many students new to kickball felt accomplished because of the support of their peers! Thank you to all the students for cheering on and remembering we are in PE to have fun! K+1st: Kinder and first both practiced their locomotor skills with our obstacle course. We then played a tagging game called "puppies" students did not want this game to end!
Week 14: We are back from winter break!! Thank you to all students and families who brought back their December fitness calendars, this is a great way to keep accountability and encourage living an active routine! Parents are the best models out there! 3-6th Warm-up: one lap followed by 15 push-ups and 15 curl-ups. Students are working on building core and arm strength in preparation for 5th grade fitness testing! Students then had introduction day to kickball, all students worked on utilizing one another, covering the whole field and making strong kicks! Students thoroughly enjoyed kickball and we will continue next week rotating teams tournament style. Kickball uses many skills previously covered in soccer, encourages collaboration, and builds into future sports such as softball! 2nd: Rainy Day and we made the most of it!! Students moved indoors, working in teams playing a fitness card game, as well as relays of cup stacking and flipping the cone. It was a very exciting, and loud day! k+1: Kinder and first played freeze tag and "Avalanche" continuing to build upon ability to move around others safely and travel in different pathways! We finished off the day with a the ever popular freeze dance! Week 13 Warm-up: Snow man building relays!! Students thoroughly enjoyed our warm-up today, their challenge was to build a snowman using PE equipment, and transport themselves using a sleigh (scooter). The crowd was roaring and students worked hard to create their teams snowman quickly! This week we incorporated coding and engineering into PE. While in teams, students had a set amount of equipment to build an obstacle course, student then had to write the directions(coding) that would allow somebody to complete the obstacle course successfully. Students were incredibly creative and had a blast trying one another courses and codes!
Week 12 Warm-up: Dynamic stretches: jog, side-step, karaoke, open gate, hop, high knees. This week grades 2-6 rotated through tournament style soccer games playing every other team in class. This was the last day of soccer and students enjoyed switching positions and playing all other friends in class. Kinder worked on their kicking and trapping skills out on the field with partners. They then weaved cones while dribbling, students were very excited to be out on the big field! 1st grade practiced their shooting skills after revisiting the biomechanics of kicking, they then went out and practiced aiming and scoring in the goals. Students then played in mini soccer games where they were encouraged to stay in their positions and spread out. Week 11 This week we revisited the importance of cardiorespiratory endurance, and students challenged themselves by completing 3 laps or a half a mile doing their best to limit walking. Soccer games (2-6) Students learned when and how to perform a throw-in, corner kick, and goalie kick. Students then played in games and had an opportunity to explore different positions. Goalie was a very popular position! Next week we will be rotating playing different teams tournament style. 1st grade Students worked through a moving stretching routine including, jogging, side stepping, karaoke, and high knees. We then discussed biomechanics of kicking and trapping a soccer ball and practiced with partners. Students then got into small groups and practiced ball control by weaving through cones dribbling (small controlled kicks). Kinder Locomotor relays for our warm-up and plastic bag exploration where students filled their bags with air, made it big and counted how many seconds for it to drop, made it small and counted how many seconds it took to drop. We also threw bag, clapped as many times, and did spins while our bag flew. This was a fun lesson incorporating outdoor elements and how they affect projection and flight of our object.
Week 10 Introduction to Soccer (2-6th) This week students learned biomechanics of kicking and trapping a soccer ball. Students then explored 5 different stations strengthening their soccer ball control skills along with passing, trapping, and dribbling capabilities. K+1 Students began the day with freeze tag where each students had the chance to be "it". There was all smiles and when students were frozen they were encouraged to dance with the music. Kinder also explore with scoops, foam frisbee, velcro mits, ring toss, practicing eye-hand coordination and manipulation skills. Students then participated in class relays where they each ran, galloped, side-stepped, hopped, and skipped. Students were all smiles while they were cheering on their classmates.
Week 9 Students developed their muscular strength through a musical poly spot warm-up where they performed push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, and mountain climbers when the music was on, and changed spots when the music was off! each spot color aligned to a different exercise. Flag Football (2-6) In teams of 6 students had opportunities to plan plays, and have 4 chances to get the ball past the end line. Each student had change to be the thrower on the team. Students did their best to defend other teammates and pull the flags of the students running with the ball. This game incorporated manipulative skills as well as social skills when planning their best route to the end line! k+1 Students warmed up by each demonstrating their favorite stretch or dance move then the whole class tried it together! We then played "Car and Driver" where students followed commands, stopping, walking, spinning (oil slick), skipping (school zone), marching(up hill), and ducking (bridge). They had a great time and were safe drivers by not bumping into others!
Week 8 Warm-up: Stretch circle and share one thing active over break! Introduction to football (2-6) This week we discussed the history of American football, and the season upon us. Students then learned the biomechanics of throwing and catching and practiced the skills in two drills. These drills developed football skills including throwing, catching, and aiming. Students also were very happy to work with each other and complete very long or shorter passes while on the run.I learned about the large quantity of skilled students at OPE who play flag football competitively! K+1 Student warmed up with an obstacle course that included hopping hurdles, jumping over noodles, weaving cones and hopping spots. Students then played a game called "Keeper of the castle", where each student had a chance to be the leader and demonstrate their listening, ability to following directions and ability to share open space.
Week 7 Spike Ball Games Warm-up: This week in classes we spoke about the importance of cardiorespiratory endurance and began the day with a 10 minute self- challenge lap run to see how many laps students could complete. Last week we worked through skills needed for spike ball, and this week we played 2 vs. 2 games with grades 4-5 and 1v1 games with grades 2-3. This was a great game with lots of excitement and many of the students really enjoyed the fast pace of the game. This is a great at home game because of the small amount of people and equipment needed, and hand-eye coordination development. Kinder +1st This week kindergarten warmed up with a game of "Red light, green light", progressing their listening skills along with locomotor skills. Students are developing their spacial awareness and doing their best to move safely in open space with others. Students then played a game of "steal the bacon" where they had to run to the center capture the ball, then pass the ball to each member of their team prior to receiving a point. This was a great practice developing catching and throwing, and communication with others. Week 6 Spike Ball Introduction (Grades 2-6) This unit was new to the school and is also a new sport often played on the beach! We had a blast learning and used modified simple equipment with a hula hoop per every 2 students and any type of ball including a gator ball, playground ball, or tennis ball. This week we worked through skills including, underhand passing to oneself, volleying to oneself (underhand and overhand), as well as self serving with the wall. We also served with partners, and were challenged by attempting to continuously rally with partners using the skills above. Kinder+1st This week students participated in a lesson called "tennis ball exploration", where they bounced, caught, and dribbled tennis balls. Students then performed these skills accompanied to the "Hokey Pokey" song where they bounced it to the left, bounced it to the right and did a spin. Students enjoyed dancing while working on ball control skills.
Week 5 Rocks (grades 2-6) We played a game called Rocks, which is a similar to capture the flag, with 15 "rocks" to capture and they are in the shape of frisbees! Students had a blast with this game and worked on their dodging, sprinting, defense and communication as they attempted to gain all of the rocks from the other teams "quarry". Kinder +1st Musical spots, when music is on students are moving around the room, when music goes off quickly find a new spot, students worked on ability to move safely within the designated space. We then worked on our eye-hand coordination with a lesson involving bean bags, we threw up the bean bag and did a circle, they threw the beanbag and clapped, we even threw the Frisbee and tried to have it land on our back! Students then did team catching and throwing in a game called grocery shopping, working on our cooperation, and manipulative skills!
Week 4 Grades 4-6: Frisbee Warm-up: Lap +3 exercises: Jumping jacks, (cardiovascular) push-ups, (muscular endurance), washing machine(flexibility). We played Capture the frisbee this week where there were two frisbees on each side of field, object was to run to other side without getting tagged, then complete passes back to own side of field for a point. These games worked on our team work, communication, and mechanics of throwing and catching while on the run. Grades 2-3: 4 Pass(Frisbee) Goal: Offense-complete 4 passes in a row using everybody on team without frisbee being blocked by defender, or going out of bounds. Students shared important strategies of using the whole field, and including all players. Kinder +1st: Hula Hoop Locomotor skills- all students had a "home base" or hula hoop, and we worked on jumping in and out, galloping around our hula hoop, skipping around other friends hula hoops, and played musical hoops where they had to find new "home bases" to stay in when the music stopped! During 1st grade P.E. it rained so we learned the Macarena indoors!
Week 3 Frisbee stations Students rotated through various frisbee stations including, frisbee bocce, frisbee hoops, frisbee buckets, and hot pancake. Students developed passing, catching, and aiming when throwing and catching a frisbee! K+1 This week kinder and first explored with tennis balls, bean bags, rubber playground balls, and scooters. Students had opportunities to dribble, toss and pass with one another. The most exciting station were the scooters!
Week 2 Introduction to Frisbee (Grades 2-6) Warm-up: 1 lap with fitness cards including mountain climbers (muscular strength), jumping jacks( Cardio endurance), and arm circles( flexibility). Frisbee Introduction: Learned steps and biomechanics of throwing and catching a frisbee. Our throwing lesson included the importance of pointing your side to target, crossing the frisbee across your body, stepping your front foot forward, and releasing frisbee with a wrist flick. Students went out and threw and caught frisbees in open space moving their spots to longer or shorter distances to test out their skills! Kinder+1st Obstacle course and full class parachute exploration. All students had chance sit under parachute, run through parachute, and the best of all was to pop "pop popcorn" together while moving the parachute quickly up and down. We also played red light, green light to work on our locomotive skills!
Week 1 Grades 1-6 Whole class relays to see how fast the entire class can run, hop, skip, karaoke, and side step. Prior to beginning students voted their predictions on how quickly they felt they could do each type of relay. Most votes were for skipping and running and a few had their highest votes on hopping! Kinder: Our first class included an introduction to P.E. then an obstacle courses of weaving cones, hopping poly spots, jumping hurdles and shooting a bean bag into the basket. Students were all smiles and worked hard on staying in line and waiting their turns.
